Severe Heatwave Warning Issued for Punjab Today; Curfew-like Conditions in the Afternoon—Read the Weather Update

Date:

The relentless and scorching heat gripping Punjab has made life extremely difficult for its residents. Due to the fiery heat beating down from the sky, even fans, air coolers, and—in many places—air conditioners are failing to provide complete relief. The intensity of the harsh sunlight begins as early as 9:00 AM, and by the afternoon, even the bustling streets of the cities take on a deserted, curfew-like appearance. To protect themselves from the heatwave (known locally as *Loo*), people are refraining from venturing out during the afternoon hours; meanwhile, those who must step out for essential tasks are doing so with their bodies fully covered in cotton clothing.

The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for a severe heatwave on May 27, accompanied by a warning for a potential ‘Orange Alert’ situation. The department has indicated a likelihood of intense heatwave conditions prevailing across several districts, including Mohali, Patiala, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Mansa, and Sangrur. Residents have been advised to avoid exposure to the harsh sunlight and hot winds during the afternoon hours.

However, according to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of strong winds and light rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning on May 28 and 29, which could offer residents some respite from the heat. The department forecasts that following light to moderate rainfall on May 29 and 30, temperatures could drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, bringing the promise of significant relief from the severe heat.
