In Chhattisgarh, more than 500 Tehsildars are on strike today. Suspending all revenue-related operations, the officials have demanded the arrest of Ramkumar Toppo, the BJP MLA from Sitapur. It is alleged that the MLA assaulted Tushar Manik, a Naib Tehsildar in the Surguja district.
Demanding action against this incident, Tehsildars from across the state have gathered in the capital, Raipur, today. Due to the strike, administrative work has come to a complete standstill in most of the state’s Tehsils. People were seen wandering aimlessly in offices, unable to access revenue-related services.
Raising questions over the matter, Congress MLA Devendra Yadav has accused the government of shielding the legislator. Meanwhile, lawyers have opposed the strike, while the Patwari Association has extended its support. The BJP has stated that action will be taken against the guilty party following a thorough investigation.
It is worth noting that prior to this, on May 30, the Junior Administrative Officers’ Association had also staged a strike. At that time, the MLA had offered to surrender himself for arrest. However, as no action has been taken thus far, protests are being staged once again today.
MLA Ramkumar Toppo alleges that Naib Tehsildar Tushar Manik behaved inappropriately with his cousin sister. Conversely, Tushar Manik alleges that the MLA and his supporters assaulted him while accusing him of misbehaving with the sister.
Subsequently, cross-FIRs were registered following complaints filed by both parties. In the wake of these events, Tehsildars across the state have united, suspended their work, and are demanding punitive action against the MLA. On the other hand, the MLA’s supporters have also demanded the removal of the Naib Tehsildar.
