A wave of grief swept through the area following the tragic death of a 25-year-old man in a road accident in Meowal village. The deceased has been identified as Kamaljit Singh, who was returning to his village from Talwan.
According to reports, a speeding sand-laden truck approaching from behind struck him; he fell beneath the vehicle and died on the spot. Following the accident, the family and villagers staged a massive protest. Accusing the police of failing to take immediate action, they placed the deceased’s body on Talwan Road, blocked traffic, and began a sit-in protest.
The protesters stated that overloaded sand-laden tippers speed along this route daily. Although the Punjab government has restricted sand mining operations to end by 5 PM, illegal mining continues here at night without any strict action from the police administration. They demanded the immediate closure of the local sand mining operations and strict legal action against the tipper driver responsible for the accident. Family members declared that the last rites of the deceased would not be performed until the accused was arrested.
Addressing the protesters, Phillaur DSP Bharat Masih assured them that the accused would be arrested within two days and that appropriate legal action would be taken. He also stated that police checkpoints in the area would be increased and strict action would be taken against vehicles lacking number plates or those violating traffic regulations.
