Man goes to in-laws’ home to fetch wife; brother-in-law sets him on fire after dousing him with petrol; survives by jumping into a drain

A shocking incident that brings shame to familial relationships has come to light in Tarn Taran district. A man who had gone to his in-laws’ house to bring his wife back was allegedly set on fire by his brother-in-law after being doused with petrol. Displaying quick thinking, the man jumped into a nearby water drain, saving his life. He is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital for severe burns.

According to reports, Lavpreet Singh, a resident of Kuhalwan village under the Lopoke police station area in Amritsar district, was married in Sangha village, Tarn Taran district. His wife had been visiting her parental home for a few days. On June 13, Lavpreet Singh arrived at his in-laws’ house to take her back home. He stated that when he first arrived, his wife was not at home, so he returned. Later, around 3:30 PM, he received a call from his brother-in-law, Sajanpreet Singh, asking him to come back to the house. Following the call, he returned to the in-laws’ residence.

**Brother-in-law sets him on fire upon arrival**

The victim alleges that as soon as he parked his motorcycle and began to enter the house, Sajanpreet Singh—who was standing near the doorway—doused him with petrol and set him ablaze. Although the sudden attack left him terrified, he did not lose his composure. To escape the flames, he immediately jumped into a nearby water drain, which helped extinguish the fire.

Following the incident, he was rushed to the hospital in an injured state. He is currently undergoing treatment at Guru Nanak Dev Super Speciality Hospital under medical supervision.

**Police register a case**

Meanwhile, the Sadar police swung into action upon receiving information about the incident. Station House Officer (SHO) Navdeep Bhatti stated that a police team arrived at the scene and recorded the injured man’s statement. Based on the preliminary investigation, a case has been registered against the accused, Sajanpreet Singh. The police state that a thorough investigation is underway and further legal action will be taken after considering all the facts. The incident has become a topic of discussion in the area, and people are expressing shock over the event.
