A meeting was convened on Tuesday under the supervision of Returning Officer-cum-SDM Jagdeep Singh to elect the President, Senior Vice-President, and Vice-President of the Bhikhiwind Nagar Panchayat.
Ranjeet Singh Cheema, Director of Punjab Water Resources and Management, attended the meeting as the representative of the Punjab government. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilors, who had won 7 out of the 13 wards, authorized the local MLA, Sarwan Singh Dhun, to select the President.
Prior to the election, all councilors were administered the oath of office. SDM Jagdeep Singh initiated the proceedings and briefed the members on their powers and responsibilities. Subsequently, Sukhdev Singh Sandhu (Councilor from Ward No. 2, who won unopposed) was appointed President of the Bhikhiwind Nagar Panchayat; Vinay Malhotra (Councilor from Ward No. 10) was appointed Senior Vice-President; and Harpal Singh (Councilor from Ward No. 8) was appointed Vice-President. It is noteworthy that Sandhu, who belongs to the Jat community, won from a general category seat. Meanwhile, the responsibility was entrusted to Vinay Malhotra, who holds significant influence over the Hindu vote bank. Harpal Singh represents the Scheduled Caste category; notably, he had previously won the councilor election five years ago representing the Akali Dal. Councilors Jasbir Kaur, Savinder Kaur, Sarabjit Singh, and Kamalpreet Kaur congratulated and honored the newly appointed office-bearers.
