Chaos ensued in Chandigarh’s Industrial Area Phase-2 on Saturday when a roughly 54-year-old two-storey building suddenly collapsed. The building’s owner and several laborers, who were inside at the time of the accident, were trapped under the debris. Upon receiving news of the incident, police, fire brigade units, and rescue teams rushed to the site and immediately launched a rescue operation.
Reports indicate that the incident caused a stir in the area. A continuous rescue operation lasting approximately five and a half hours was carried out to extricate those trapped in the rubble. Rescue teams successfully retrieved all the individuals buried under the debris.
Preliminary information suggests that two people may have died. During the rescue, two individuals were wrapped in white sheets and transported to the hospital by ambulance, while other injured persons were also admitted for treatment. However, the administration has yet to officially confirm the number of fatalities and injuries.
Following the accident, the police cordoned off the area and restricted public movement. Relief agencies are working to determine the cause of the collapse. While the building’s advanced age has been cited as a likely factor, the actual cause will only be clarified after an investigation.
