Organ donation by Mohali woman who died in road accident; mother’s courageous decision gives new life to four people

Date:

Surinder Kaur, an 18-year-old who was critically injured in a road accident, has passed away. Her mother, Santosh Kaur, made the courageous decision to donate her daughter’s organs. Surinder’s kidneys, pancreas, and corneas were donated.

One kidney and the pancreas were simultaneously transplanted into a 31-year-old patient, while the other kidney was given to a 15-year-old patient. The corneas are expected to restore vision to two patients. Thus, even after Surinder’s life ended, her organs will bring new hope to the lives of four people. Surinder was a resident of Teur village in Kharar, Mohali. She had been admitted to PGI following a road accident on August 23. On August 25, the Brain Stem Death Committee declared her brain-stem dead. Her mother, Santosh Kaur, said that while Surinder could not be brought back, the knowledge that a part of her could live on in someone else’s life would give meaning to her own life.

**Surgery lasted 18 hours**
The donated kidney and pancreas were transplanted simultaneously into a 31-year-old patient—a procedure known as a Simultaneous Pancreas-Kidney (SPK) transplant. This patient had previously received a kidney donated by his mother, but that transplant had failed.

The surgery lasted approximately 13 hours, with various medical teams working for a total of 18 hours. The second kidney was transplanted into a 15-year-old patient, while the two corneas will help restore vision to two other patients.

**Noor donates hair for cancer patients for the second time**
Noor, from Chandigarh, donated her hair for cancer patients for the second time. She stated that she would continue this initiative to ensure patients do not feel alone due to hair loss. Noor believes that society should stand in solidarity with cancer patients.
