A railway employee—who serves as a Chief Ticket Inspector and is also the secretary of the railway employees’ union—was attacked by a fellow railway employee and several associates while at his residence in the Railway Colony. The assailants beat him with iron rods and sticks; one of them even bit off a portion of his ear. The police have registered a case against seven individuals, including four unidentified persons, in connection with the incident.
Railway union elections are scheduled for July 24, and the attack is suspected to be the result of election-related rivalry. According to reports, on Friday night, Chief Ticket Inspector Thakur Singh (a resident of the Railway Colony) was at his official residence when a railway booking clerk—Paramjit Singh—along with Sandeep Singh, Jeeta Singh (residents of Bathinda), and about four unidentified accomplices barged into his home. They began assaulting him with iron rods and sticks, and one of the attackers bit off part of his ear. The assailants also damaged his vehicle. They fled the scene after the attack, leaving behind a motorcycle, which has been seized by the Canal Colony police. Thakur Singh was admitted to the Civil Hospital but was subsequently referred to a private hospital. The Canal Colony police have registered a case against all the accused and are proceeding with further action.
