Acting in a high-profile case involving a fraud of ₹50 lakh in Amritsar, the police have detained Dinesh Bassi, the former Chairman of the Improvement Trust. A team of police officials is currently questioning him behind closed doors at the police station. Upon learning of his detention, a large number of Congress party members gathered outside the station and began protesting.
According to reports, the police had previously registered a case against Dinesh Bassi’s son and a close associate for the alleged ₹50 lakh fraud. Linking the former chairman to this fraud, the police investigation team has now brought him under scrutiny and initiated questioning at the station.
**Arrested Under the Pretext of Questioning**
As soon as news of Dinesh Bassi’s detention broke, a large number of councilors and supporters assembled outside the police station. According to the Congress members, the police had visited Bassi’s office at Golden Gate at 12:30 PM and asked him to accompany them to the station for questioning regarding the case. Bassi then arrived at the Civil Lines police station along with his Congress associates.
**Police Investigation Underway**
A Congress councilor alleged that shortly thereafter, the police forcibly pushed the councilors out and shut the station gates. Consequently, the Congress members staged a sit-in protest right outside the station gate. Meanwhile, the police have not yet made a definitive statement regarding the matter; the investigation is ongoing, and Dinesh Bassi is being interrogated behind closed doors.
