‘You are the one who is confused, not us…’; Pralhad Joshi hits back at Rahul Gandhi over Amit Shah video clips

Date:

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha—who has been issuing challenges for a debate over the past few days—has been persistently questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

In a recent post pinned to his X (formerly Twitter) account, the Congress MP shared two short clips featuring Home Minister Amit Shah—one from last year and another from Thursday. In the clip from December 5 last year, Amit Shah is seen stating, “It is my firm view that the SIR cannot be discussed in this House. If it were to be discussed and questions were raised, who would provide the answers?” Rahul Gandhi remarked, “I am confused.”

Meanwhile, in the clip from Thursday, Amit Shah says, “You challenge Modi to a debate—well, Rahul-ji, there is no need for Modi-ji; we are prepared to convene a special session of the House to discuss the SIR.” In response to this, Rahul Gandhi commented, “I am confused.”

Defending his party, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi accused the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, of circulating a video of Amit Shah that had been edited and taken out of context.

Joshi stated, “The video of Home Minister Amit Shah—which has been edited and presented out of context—demonstrates only one thing: Rahul Gandhi has done absolutely no homework on the subject of the SIR.” At the same time, the remarks made by Amit Shah regarding the SIR last December do appear to align with what was presented in the Congress leader’s post. The Home Minister stated in Parliament, “It is my firm view that the ‘SIR’ (Simultaneous Internal Review/process) cannot be discussed in this House, as this work is being handled by the Election Commission of India. The Election Commission of India and the Chief Election Commissioner do not function under the government. If this were to be discussed and questions were raised, who would provide the answers? When they expressed a willingness to discuss electoral reforms, we agreed immediately, and today, the discussion is indeed focused on electoral reforms.” It appears he has drawn a clear distinction between a discussion on electoral reforms and the ‘SIR’ process.

‘Questioning the process upon losing elections’
Meanwhile, Joshi believes that the clip posted by Rahul Gandhi on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) has been tampered with. Furthermore, this November, the Home Minister indicated that the government is prepared to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the ‘SIR’ process.

The Minister reminded the Congress leader that he had lost three consecutive Lok Sabha elections—in 2014, 2019, and 2024—even though no ‘SIR’ process was conducted at those times. He remarked, “Rahul-ji, the confusion is clearly yours, not ours! When you win an election, the electoral process seems fine to you, but when you lose, you suddenly begin to question that very same process. Is this your understanding of democracy? You lost the 2014, 2019, and 2024 Lok Sabha elections even when no ‘SIR’ process was in place. Will you take responsibility for those defeats, or will you blame something else?”

He accused Gandhi of engaging in political theatrics and challenged him to come to Parliament to debate the matter based on facts. Joshi said, “And now that Home Minister Amit Shah has issued an open challenge to you to discuss the SIR in Parliament—and has even proposed a special session—why the hesitation? Rahul-ji, enough of this political drama. Bring your arguments to Parliament and debate based on facts.”
