The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Thursday announced it will resume the farmers’ agitation to realise its MSP demands and stop the privatisation of the power sector, among others.
The SKM also said it has sought time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi to submit its charter of demands. The decision was taken in the general body meeting of the SKM held in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Dr Darshan Pal, Member, National Coordination Committee, SKM, said, “Memorandums will be submitted to the newly elected MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on July 16, 17, and 18. The state units of the SKM will be meeting the MPs of their respective states. In addition, the SKM will be seeking time from the PM as well as the LoP to hand them over the memorandums.”
Ruldu Singh Mansa, President, Punjab Kisan Union, and another NCC member of the SKM, said, “On July 17, a three-hour-long protest will be carried out outside the houses of the Punjab CM and all AAP ministers to press upon the demands related to the state, including the water crisis, debt burden, and opening of the India-Pakistan road trade corridor, among others…”
SKM leaders said they will organise seminars in all states on the same day to highlight how the water crisis and climate change are affecting agriculture.
The SKM will also observe August 9 as ‘Corporate Quit India Day’, demanding India’s withdrawal from the World Trade Organization.
SKM members claimed that the BJP lost 63 seats in the Lok Sabha owing to its ‘Expose, Oppose and Punish BJP’ campaign. The defeat of the BJP in 38 rural seats in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra was owing to the SKM’s campaign, they added.
The farmers’ organisation vowed to continue the anti-BJP campaign in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.
