The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is continuously tightening its grip on the corruption of Chandigarh Police. In a major action, CBI has arrested ASI Sher Singh posted at ISBT-43 red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 4500. This was the second trap of CBI on Chandigarh Police in a month.
Earlier, constables and officers posted in a unit of Crime Branch were also on CBI’s radar, but they got a hint in time, due to which the trap could not succeed. Senior officers of Chandigarh Police are also aware of this entire matter.
Demanded Rs 1.5 lakh in cheque bounce case
ASI Sher Singh posted at ISBT-43 had demanded a bribe from Davinder, a resident of Burail, to save him from arrest in a cheque bounce case of Rs 1.5 lakh. Davinder lodged a complaint in CBI Sector-30. CBI recorded Sher Singh demanding bribe and laid a trap at the police post itself through a middleman on Monday evening at around 4:30 pm. When Sher Singh’s hands were washed, they were stained with colour.
CBI arrived with the recording
According to sources, CBI was keeping an eye on some police officers for several days. The agency had strong evidence, which included the recording of the bribe demand. This matter is related to a criminal case and CBI is still investigating it.
Policemen did not improve despite warning
DGP Surendra Singh Yadav has already issued a strict warning regarding corruption in Chandigarh Police. After taking charge, he met constables and senior officers and made it clear that the job of the police is to serve the people, not to collude with criminals. He had said that strict legal action will be taken against anyone caught taking bribe.
Action has been taken earlier too
Earlier, a case was registered against Crime Branch constable Yudhbir, DSP SPS Sondhi and three policemen Om Prakash, Jaspal and woman constable Jaswinder for defaming the DGP.
CBI has registered a case against accused ASI Sher Singh under Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigation is underway.
