CBI Special Court has granted interim bail on medical grounds to CBI DSP Balbir Singh, accused in the Rs 55 lakh bribery case involving Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer Vishal Deep in Shimla. A bail application was filed by Balbir in the court on February 24. In this case, Balbir along with ED Assistant Director Vishaldeep, his brother Vikasdeep and cousin Neeraj have been made accused.
CBI had registered a corruption case on 22 December 2024, in which Balbir was also included. During the investigation, CBI had recovered a total bribe amount of Rs 54 lakh. A total of two FIRs were registered in the case, out of which a charge sheet has also been filed in one. Co-accused Vikasdeep and Neeraj have also filed bail applications, on which notice has been issued to CBI on March 13 for hearing.
Cited 8 serious diseases
Balbir Singh’s lawyer KP Singh argued in the court that his client is 56 years old and is suffering from 8 serious diseases. These include coronary artery disease, triple vessel disease, chronic kidney disease, acute onset atrial fibrillation, systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus type-2, LVEF-24% and hyperthyroidism.
Heart surgery done in 2020
The lawyer told that Balbir has undergone heart bypass surgery in 2020 and kidney transplant in 2022. He is suffering from many life-threatening diseases and needs special medical facilities. If he does not get proper treatment, the risk of heart attack may increase and he may also die.
The lawyer also told that Balbir has been advised to live in a clean environment, but his health is continuously deteriorating in jail. His blood pressure and sugar level are getting imbalanced, which is a threat to his life. He has to take insulin four times a day and follow a disciplined diet, which is not possible in jail. Apart from this, he also has to undergo various medical tests from time to time.
Allegation of bribery in scholarship scam
Let us tell you that this whole matter is related to the alleged scholarship scam in Himachal Pradesh. ED officer Vishaldeep, who is investigating this scam, is accused of demanding bribe from two people. At the same time, CBI has called DSP Balbir Singh the mastermind of this bribery case.
