The increasing incidents of crime by minors in Chandigarh have again brought the problem of juvenile crime to the fore. Especially the involvement of minors in serious cases like murder has now become a matter of great concern for both the society and the administration.
According to the data released by Chandigarh Police, 587 minors have been caught in different criminal cases since the year 2020. These include cases like murder, attempt to murder, rape, kidnapping, riot, robbery, looting, snatching and theft.
5 arrested for murder in 4 months
Five minors have been arrested for murder from January to April 2025. At the same time, the total number of minors arrested in murder cases from 2020 till now has been 36. These figures point to the increasing violent tendencies among the youth in the city.
According to the police, out of the minor criminals caught since the year 2020, 299 are between the ages of 16 and 18 years, while 281 are between the ages of 12 and 16 years. At the same time, in seven cases, children below the age of 12 have also been caught in crimes.
According to these figures, during this period, 86 minors have been caught in theft cases, 64 in snatching and attempt to murder, 60 in riots and uproar and 38 on charges of rape.

During the last one month, incidents of riots, arson and disturbance have been reported in areas like Sector 25, Ram Darbar and Manimajra. In many cases, minors were stabbed, due to which FIRs had to be registered. One such case is the death of Aditya Thakur, a student of Punjab University, in which a 17-year-old teenager is the main accused.
