The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the release of 412 prisoners of Punjab on interim bail within two weeks, whose applications for premature release are pending. In this case, the court has also reprimanded the authority responsible for not taking action on the applications of the prisoners. At the same time, the court has also termed it a matter of concern.
The High Court said that due to this, the prisoners had to stay in jail for a longer time, while they were eligible to be released. Such an indisciplined attitude is a symptom of the insensitive civilization that has developed in the matter of rights and well-being of prisoners.
Behavior like a second class citizen is not right
Hearing the case, the High Court has ordered Chandigarh and Haryana to submit affidavits regarding pending premature release cases in the last two years. The court has also said that one cannot be treated like a second class citizen. These instructions have come after the affidavit of 10 December 2024.
More than thirty thousand prisoners are lodged in jails
The court said in this case that the state is duty bound to act impartially and move forward according to the strategy prepared by it. Remember that there are currently 27 jails in Punjab. More than 30 thousand prisoners are filled in them. The government has plans to build a High Court in Ludhiana.
