An FIR (No. 0030/2025) has been registered under Section 126 of the Representation of People Act, 1951 and Section 223 of the Indian Justice Code, 2023 for publishing an opinion poll in connection with the Ludhiana West by-election to be held on June 19, 2025.
This publication of the opinion poll is in violation of the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, which prohibit the broadcast or publication of any opinion poll in the electronic media 48 hours before the end of polling.
FIR lodged by Returning Officer
This complaint was formally lodged by the Returning Officer of 64-Ludhiana West Assembly Constituency. The publication of such a poll is considered an attempt to influence the perception, opinion and electoral response of voters, thereby harming the fairness and integrity of the election process.
It is necessary to mention that several complaints were received regarding publishing of opinion polls during restricted hours by some online channels like “Turn Times”, “Jan Hitaishi”, “The City Headlines” and “E News Punjab”.
