Temperature drops by 6 degrees in Chandigarh: Chances of rain after June 20, Municipal Corporation forms 18 emergency teams

Date:

People suffering from scorching heat in Chandigarh have now got some relief. The weather cooled down due to light rain on Monday and Tuesday night. A total of 3.6 mm of rain in the last 2 days has brought down the temperature by about 6 degrees.

Light rain again occurred at around 12 o’clock on Tuesday night. The maximum temperature in the airport area was 30 degrees and 31 degrees at Sector-39 weather station. The minimum temperature also fell by 2 degrees compared to Monday to 25.1 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department says that there is a possibility of good rain after June 20.

This time the nights are the hottest in the last 10 years

This year’s heat can be gauged from the fact that the temperature is breaking records even at night. The night temperature on Tuesday was 25.1 degrees, which is the highest in the last 10 years. For example, the night temperature on June 6, 2016 was 21 degrees and on June 1, 2020 it was 21.1 degrees. In such a situation, this time’s hot nights remain a matter of concern for meteorologists.

According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon is progressing rapidly this time. After staying in Maharashtra for 120 days, the monsoon has now reached half of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. At the same time, with the help of winds rising from the Bay of Bengal, it has also reached half of Bihar. It is estimated that around June 21, the monsoon will become fully active in entire North India including Chandigarh and good rain will be seen.

Municipal Corporation’s preparation, 18 special teams formed

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is fully alert to deal with waterlogging and emergency situations arising from rain during monsoon. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Amit Kumar has formed 18 special flood control teams, which will be active from June 20 to September 30. Apart from this, 7 waterlogging control rooms will be operational 24×7 across the city.

Teams will work in three shifts in these control rooms and citizens will be able to register complaints of waterlogging on dedicated helpline numbers. Field managers, multi-task workers and public health department officials will be present in every room.

Responsibilities of the departments were decided as follows:

18 emergency teams: Joint teams of public health, B&R, horticulture, electrical, fire and MOH departments have been formed.

Fire brigade staff: Personnel trained in disaster management will be deployed at major sites.

B&R department: Will take responsibility of barricading the collapse sites.

Water tankers: 5 tanker drivers will be available round the clock.

Holidays cancelled: No employee will get casual or earned leave during the monsoon period.

Cleanliness drive will be run every two weeks (fortnight) from June 18

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has decided that from June 18, cleanliness drive will be run in all areas of the city every two weeks (fortnight). The purpose of this cleaning is to prevent waterlogging during rainy days, mosquitoes should not breed and diseases should not spread. Municipal corporation teams will thoroughly clean the roads, drains and dirty places. The waste will be segregated and disposed of properly.
