The new trauma centre built at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector-32, Chandigarh will be opened to the public in August. It will have a facility of 259 beds, which will provide great relief to the increasing pressure on the emergency health services of the city.
GMCH Medical Superintendent Dr. GP Thami said that the building of the trauma center is ready and now medical equipment is being installed. He said that a proposal has been sent to the UT administration to inaugurate it on the day of the 11th convocation of GMCH. However, it has not been decided yet who will be the chief guest at the program.
There was a delay due to Kovid
This trauma center was approved in the year 2019 and its construction was to be completed in one and a half years, but the project was delayed during the Kovid-19 pandemic. As the pressure on the existing emergency block increased, the construction of the trauma center was again expedited. Officials hope that the new facility will reduce the crowd and the old emergency wing can be used for other departments.
The city will get two trauma centres
With the opening of this trauma centre, apart from PGIMER in Chandigarh, GMCH will also have a separate trauma centre, which will further strengthen the city’s ability to deal with serious emergency situations.
At present, GMCH has a provision of about 150 emergency and trauma beds, which often falls short during busy times. Many times patients have to be handled on stretchers in the corridor itself. The new building is expected to improve patient care and speed up treatment.
