Mohali, Punjab –
In a major development in the ongoing investigation into corruption and alleged gang-criminal nexus in Punjab Police, the Vigilance Bureau has registered an FIR against dismissed DSP Gursher Singh and his mother Sukhwant Kaur in a disproportionate assets case. This comes in continuation of the infamous episode involving gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose police custody interview raised national questions on custodial privileges.
FIR Registered by Flying Squad in Mohali
The FIR has been filed by the Flying Squad of Vigilance Bureau, Mohali, after a preliminary inquiry revealed glaring financial inconsistencies. Between April 2021 and March 2024, the now-dismissed officer received a salary of approximately ₹26 lakh, but incurred expenses amounting to ₹2.59 crore, which could not be justified based on his known sources of income.
DSP Gursher May Have Fled the Country
Sources close to the investigation suspect that Gursher Singh may have escaped abroad, as Vigilance teams have failed to trace him during recent raids. His passport details and travel history are now under scrutiny. Officials are also coordinating with immigration departments and central agencies to track his current location.
Asset Evaluation & Financial Irregularities
According to the Vigilance Bureau:
-
On April 1, 2021, the bank accounts of Gursher Singh and his family had a combined balance of ₹3 lakh.
-
At the same time, he had loans amounting to ₹3.17 lakh.
-
His declared income during the probe period stood at ₹96.7 lakh, but the actual assets and financial outflows indicate significantly more wealth.
By March 31, 2024, Gursher Singh:
-
Held immovable property worth ₹2.47 crore.
-
Had bank deposits of ₹83.88 lakh.
-
Accumulated ₹1.81 crore in company shares, firm holdings, and society investments.
-
Had loans worth ₹25.17 lakh.
These figures point toward a significant mismatch, strengthening the basis of the disproportionate assets case.
Lawrence Bishnoi’s Interview Sparked the Investigation
The roots of this FIR lie in the controversial televised interviews given by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. The first interview, broadcast in March 2023, occurred when Bishnoi was in Punjab Police custody at CIA Kharar, and the second one took place while he was lodged in Jaipur Central Jail.
Interview Details:
-
First Interview (March 14, 2023):
-
Lawrence claimed responsibility for the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala.
-
Alleged Moosewala was involved in the killing of his friend, Akali leader Vicky Middukhera.
-
-
Second Interview:
-
Conducted inside Jaipur Jail, Bishnoi showed his cell, explained how mobile phones are thrown inside, and how he managed to make calls at night when jail staff movement is low.
-
He mentioned that signal jammers are often bypassed, and mobiles often reach him despite surveillance.
-
Government Action & Suspensions
After the interviews went viral and the media outcry erupted, the Punjab Government launched a high-level inquiry. The SIT (Special Investigation Team) findings led to suspension of multiple officers including:
-
DSP Gursher Singh (9 Battalion, Amritsar)
-
DSP Samar Vanit
-
SI Reena (CIA Kharar)
-
SI Jagatpal Jangu (AGTF)
-
SI Shaganjeet Singh (AGTF)
-
ASI Mukhtiar Singh
-
HC Om Prakash
Gursher Singh was later dismissed from service, and he has since moved Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging his termination.
Upcoming Court Hearing on July 3
The Punjab and Haryana High Court is set to hear the petition filed by Gursher Singh on July 3 regarding his dismissal from the police department. Legal experts believe the ongoing FIR related to disproportionate assets may further complicate his chances of reinstatement or relief.
