Punjab Tragedy: Husband and Wife Burnt Alive in House Fire, 10-Year-Old Son Unharmed

Date:

Barnala, Punjab – In a heart-wrenching tragedy from Punjab’s Barnala district, a couple was burnt alive after a fire broke out in their home early Tuesday morning. The incident took place in village Moon in the Mahalkalan constituency. The shocking aspect: while the husband and wife perished in the fire, their 10-year-old son miraculously survived without a scratch, as he was sleeping at his uncle’s house that night.

🔥 How Did the Incident Happen?

According to the family and police sources, the victims – Jagrup Singh, son of Labh Singh, and his wife Angrez Kaur – had been sleeping outside due to the summer heat. However, around 3 AM, a sudden downpour forced them indoors to their bedroom.

Moments later, a fire broke out inside the room, allegedly caused by a short circuit, trapping the couple.

  • Jagrup Singh died on the spot.

  • His wife Angrez Kaur was rushed to Barnala Civil Hospital, and later referred to Faridkot Medical Center due to critical burns. Unfortunately, she was declared brought dead upon arrival.

👦 Son Survives, Family Devastated

The couple’s 10-year-old son escaped the tragedy because he was sleeping at his uncle’s house that night. He is physically unharmed, but the emotional trauma of losing both parents in a single night will cast a long shadow over his young life.

Now, the family consists only of the child and his elderly grandfather, who were both staying at a relative’s home when the fire occurred.

Cause of Fire: Suspected Short Circuit

Initial police investigation suggests that an electrical short circuit triggered the fire. Heavy rainfall may have disrupted the wiring system, resulting in the sudden ignition within the bedroom.

SHO Kiranjit Kaur of the local police station confirmed:

“Our preliminary findings indicate a short circuit as the probable cause. A full investigation is currently underway.”

🏘️ Wave of Grief in the Village

The entire village Moon is in mourning. Local residents described Jagrup and Angrez as hardworking, humble, and helpful. The sudden nature of their death has shaken the entire community.

Village elders and the local panchayat have extended their support to the bereaved family and are urging authorities and NGOs to step in for the welfare and education of the surviving child.

⚠️ A Cautionary Tale for All

This tragic event is not just a domestic accident; it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of electrical safety, especially during the monsoon season. Households must ensure safe wiring, avoid overloading circuits, and if possible, install fire alarms to prevent such incidents.

Experts recommend regular inspection of domestic electrical systems, particularly in rural homes where exposed wiring is common.
