Chandigarh | Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has found strong support amid the ongoing controversy surrounding his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3. While certain groups have raised objections over the film allegedly involving a Pakistani actress, a wave of backing has emerged from Punjab’s political and artistic circles.
Congress MLA Pargat Singh, representing Jalandhar Cantonment, has publicly stood in support of Diljit, stating emphatically that the artist “won’t be silenced” despite growing opposition.
“Some people are trying to corner and suppress Diljit Dosanjh, but let me make it clear—he is not someone who will bow down,” said Pargat Singh.
🎤 “An Artist Has No Religion or Caste” – Pargat Singh
Addressing the issue, the senior Congress leader stated:
“An artist transcends religious and caste lines. Art and creativity should not be shackled by narrow mindsets. We should avoid politicising such matters which can divide society.”
He also emphasized that as someone who has represented India and Punjab on global platforms (a reference to his past as a hockey player), he understands what it takes to carry the identity of Punjab with pride.
“Diljit has brought global attention to Punjabi culture. Attacking him now reflects poorly on those trying to impose restrictions,” he added.
🧾 Criticism of AAP and the ‘Clean Chit’ Controversy
Apart from voicing support for Diljit, Pargat Singh also took a direct dig at the AAP government in Punjab, particularly over the recent clean chit given to AAP leader Vijay Inder Singla, who was previously accused of corruption.
“Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier claimed to have solid evidence against Singla, yet now he is being cleared of all charges. So who should the public believe?” asked Pargat.
He questioned the integrity of the governance, suggesting the corruption narrative was simply “a political drama to fool the public.”
🚨 Failure on Drug Policy Promises
Pargat didn’t stop there. He further reminded the AAP government of its promise to make Punjab drug-free by 31st May.
“It’s already July, and we see no real action on the ground. Drug mafias continue to operate, and the government seems more focused on optics than on actual enforcement,” he said.
The MLA also slammed the much-publicized “bulldozer action” against alleged drug traffickers:
“No actual trafficker’s house has been demolished. The government is merely targeting shamlat (community) lands and presenting it as action against drugs.”
📜 On Majithia & Legal Process
Asked about Bikram Singh Majithia, a senior SAD leader and former minister previously under investigation in drug-related cases, Pargat stated:
“Let the law take its course. If the government wants to proceed legally, they must. But when Majithia was arrested previously, Congress did not oppose it.”
He clarified that Congress believes in due process—not political vendetta.
🗳️ On Election Loss and Public Sentiment
Speaking about India National Congress’s defeat in the Ludhiana West constituency where Bharat Bhushan Ashu lost, Pargat accepted the public’s verdict:
“It’s democracy. People have made their choice. Maybe we failed in some way, and we will introspect.”
He noted that the voters likely chose candidates from the ruling party with the hope that pending local works would be addressed faster.
🚔 On Policing and Law & Order
Pargat expressed concern over the current state of policing and governance:
“A good regime is where good citizens feel confident and the wrongdoers feel fear. Today, it’s the opposite. If criminal elements are sitting comfortably inside police stations and law-abiding citizens are afraid to walk in, that’s a failure of governance.”
🏛️ On Resignation from Party Post
Finally, commenting on his resignation from the role of Congress’s working president in Punjab, he said:
“I have no issues with the party. I stepped down so that new leadership can emerge and strengthen the organisation.”
