‘Papa take me away’… Punjab’s daughter’s last cry remained unheard, today she is no more

There is news of a newly married woman being hanged to death by her in-laws in village Sarali Mand under Thana City Patti. The deceased has been identified as Navneet Kaur daughter of Mahnga Singh resident of Kot Dusandi Mal, Jhabbal Halka, Tarn Taran. The police has taken the body into custody and started further action.

Chief Inspector Kawaljit Rai of Thana City Patti said that in a statement given to the police, Mahnga Singh son of Jagroop Singh resident of Kot Dusandi Mal said that about 7 months ago his daughter was married to Harvinder Singh son of Hira Singh resident of Sarali Mand and about 7 months later on 01 August he received a call from Dilbagh Singh son of Santokh Singh resident of Sarli Mand that Navneet Kaur Neetu and Harvinder Singh keep fighting and on 2 August the girl Navneet Kaur told that her uncle-in-law Dilbagh Singh and my husband Harvinder Singh are beating me. You come and take me. She said that I will come and tell you. I said that I will come and take you tomorrow.

It was revealed that my daughter’s in-laws used to harass her for dowry. On August 2, Navneet Kaur’s in-laws called her and said that Navneet had hanged herself. When I reached Sarli Mand with my uncle’s son former SHO Gurmeet Singh, Navneet Kaur’s body was lying on the bed in the room. The complainant told that Navneet Kaur’s husband Harvinder Singh and her uncle-in-law Dilbagh Singh son Santokh Singh resident of Sarli Mand strangled her to death. The police have taken the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem. Balbir Singh of Inchan Police Outpost Cairo, the investigating officer of this incident, said that on the basis of the statements of the complainant, a case has been registered against Harvinder Singh and his uncle Dilbagh Singh and raids are being conducted to take them into custody.
