In light of a notification issued by the Director of Animal Husbandry, District Magistrate Ankurjit Singh has declared an area of 0-1 km around the epicenter in Bhora village, Nawanshahr tehsil, as an “infected area” and an area of 0-10 km as a “surveillance area” after African swine fever was detected in pigs.
The District Magistrate has issued orders under Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, to prevent the spread of African swine fever outside the infected area. The orders state that all persons engaged in pig rearing within the boundaries of Shaheed Bhagat Singh District shall refrain from traveling within a 10-kilometer radius of the African swine fever-affected area and from entering the affected area from outside the area. Similarly, all movement of pigs and the import or import of pigs and pig products from states and districts bordering the district will be strictly prohibited. There will also be a complete ban on transporting any live or dead pigs (wild boar, pork, pig feed, any pig farming equipment and machinery, etc.) out of the affected area or bringing them into the affected area from outside the affected area. Furthermore, there will be a complete ban on any person transporting African swine fever-affected pigs or pig products to the market. This order will remain in effect until November 23, 2025.
