The Punjab Police have taken strict action against objectionable and illegal content on social media. Police in several districts have filed numerous FIRs based on complaints, primarily related to posts and videos made against the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
Police stated that over 100 social media accounts have been found to be sharing hateful and inflammatory content. According to police, these posts included attacks against high constitutional officials, caste-based insults, and provocative rhetoric.
Their purpose was to create unrest in society and undermine respect for judicial institutions. Police stated that these posts not only displayed caste-based insults and hatred, but also deliberately attempted to intimidate Scheduled Caste members and spread hostility between communities.
FIRs in these cases have been registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and sections 196, 352, 353(1), 353(2), and 61 of the Indian Penal Code. Police say they are monitoring social media to identify the culprits. They stressed that freedom does not mean that one can spread hatred or incite violence. Following the registration of the FIR, an investigation is underway.
