Due to a land dispute, the younger brother, a resident of Mata Gujri Colony, Fatehgarh Sahib, attempted self-immolation by dousing himself with petrol after being harassed by his brother. He was initially taken to a private hospital in Mandi Gobindgarh for treatment, from where he was referred to PGI, where he died during treatment. Upon receiving information about the incident, the Fatehgarh Sahib police registered a case against the brother and initiated further action.
Giving details, SHO Inderjit Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib police station said that Surjit Singh, who was posted as a Panchayat Secretary in Bassi Pathana, had recorded a statement before the Honorable Judge Sahib of Amloh, in which he mentioned the land division. After recording the statement, Surjit Singh died during treatment, and a case has been registered against Paramjit Singh based on the family’s statement.
Inspector Inderjit Singh, in-charge of Fatehgarh Sahib police station, said that in the complaint given to the police, Surjit Singh’s wife, Harvinder Kaur, has made a sensational revelation regarding her husband’s death. According to Harvinder Kaur, her father-in-law, Balwinder Singh, owned 16 acres of ancestral agricultural land. During his lifetime, Balwinder Singh transferred 4 acres of land each to his two sons—Paramjit Singh and Surjit Singh—while keeping 8 acres for himself. After his death, the elder son, Paramjit Singh, also got the 8 acres of land belonging to his father transferred to his name, thus acquiring a total of 12 acres of land. The younger brother, Surjit Singh, was left with only 4 acres of land. According to the police, Surjit Singh, distressed by this land division, came under immense mental pressure, and it was this stress that led him to take this tragic step.
