The Punjab government has implemented a major change in the transport system, making all challan payments completely online. After the introduction of the faceless RTO system in the state, all challan counters at RTO offices have been closed. This means that no cash payments will be accepted from any vehicle owner at the RTO office.
Challans will now only be paid online
The Punjab Transport Department has clarified that challan payments will now only be accepted through online modes. Both the traffic police and the RTO department now issue challans online. The driver is informed of the amount at the time the challan is issued. If the driver pays on the spot, they will not have to submit any documents. If the payment is made later, the police or RTO will seize the documents. After payment, the driver can retrieve their documents by showing the e-receipt.
Documents will now be delivered to your home
RTO officer Kuldeep Singh Bawa said that the department is now working on a plan under which, after online payment, the documents will be sent to the driver’s home by post. As soon as the payment information is received in the system, the RTO will start the process of sending the documents home.
The role of touts eliminated
After the implementation of the new system, the role of touts will be completely eliminated. Earlier, people who came to pay challans often fell prey to touts. In many cases, the touts would disappear after taking the money. Several FIRs have been registered in such cases at the Ludhiana RTO office.
260 challans still pending
RTO Kuldeep Singh Bawa said that currently, about 260 challans are pending at the office, which have come from the police department. An employee has been appointed for these cases who will explain the online payment process to people.
