A shocking revelation has emerged in the central government’s new Swachh Bharat Mission report. According to the report, many smaller towns are now performing better than larger cities in sanitation and waste management.
Ludhiana ranks second in the 2025 list of ‘Top 10 Dirtiest Cities’, while Madurai is at the top. Other major cities like Chennai, Ranchi, Bengaluru, Dhanbad, Faridabad, Greater Mumbai, Srinagar, and Delhi are also included in this list.
The report states that smaller towns are improving rapidly despite limited resources, while the situation is deteriorating in larger cities due to population growth and weak waste management. Experts said that cleanliness is not just about money, but also about better planning, civic responsibility, and strict administrative measures. Citizen participation has been highlighted as the most crucial factor for clean cities.
