‘The SIT is Interfering…’ — SGPC President Harjinder Dhami Speaks on the ‘328 *Swaroop*’ Case, Targets the Government

Date:

Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has raised objections regarding the functioning of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Punjab government to probe the case involving 328 sacred *Swaroop* (copies of the Guru Granth Sahib). He alleged that the SIT is overstepping its jurisdiction and engaging in unnecessary interference in the internal and administrative affairs of the SGPC.

Dhami stated that, under the guise of an investigation, attempts are being made to undermine the constitutional identity and rights of the Sikhs’ premier religious institution—a move that will not be tolerated at any cost. The SGPC has, from the very beginning, extended full cooperation to the investigation team with complete transparency and seriousness, and has provided every necessary piece of information in accordance with the directives of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

**No Connection to the ‘328 *Swaroop*’ Case: Dhami**
He alleged that, despite this, the SIT continues to demand information that bears no direct relevance to the case concerning the 328 sacred *Swaroop*. According to Dhami, the SIT’s demand for the SGPC’s financial accounts, bank transactions, and economic statements falls outside its jurisdictional purview. At times, the SIT attempts to gather account details by dispatching its representatives to banks; at other times, it seeks detailed financial records through written correspondence. Furthermore, details regarding agreements signed with private channels—ETC and G Next Media—for the broadcasting of *Gurbani Kirtan* have also been sought, even though these matters have absolutely no connection to the ‘328 *Swaroop*’ case.

**Information Being Demanded Repeatedly: Dhami**
Dhami further noted that information which has already been furnished to the SIT is being demanded repeatedly. According to him, these actions constitute a deviation from the core objective of the investigation and suggest that the inquiry team may be operating with ulterior motives. The SGPC President alleged that the Punjab government is attempting to target the constitutional rights of the Sikhs’ apex religious body through the SIT. This is not merely an issue concerning the SGPC, but a sensitive matter pertaining to the autonomy and rights of Sikh institutions. The SIT must not exceed its jurisdiction and should confine itself solely to the investigation regarding the 328 sacred *Swaroops*.
