Pre-monsoon boost for Sukhna Lake: First phase of desilting complete; visitors to enjoy improved facilities.

Date:

With the aim of increasing Sukhna Lake’s water storage capacity and strengthening its ecosystem, the UT Engineering Department has achieved its target of excavating approximately 34,000 cubic meters of soil as part of the ongoing desilting drive at the ‘Regulatory End’. However, the work will continue until the onset of the monsoon.

Chief Engineer CB Ojha stated that approximately 80 percent of the desilting project has been completed. The desilting work in the dry section of the lake began a month ago, based on technical recommendations from IIT Roorkee, the WWF, and the Forest Department.
He mentioned that excavation is being carried out up to a level of approximately 351 meters at the Regulatory End. The excavated soil is being utilized scientifically to strengthen and raise the height of the lake’s embankments and walkways.
