Rishikesh. River rafting enthusiasts will have to wait a while longer. The water level of the Ganges is rising due to continuous rainfall in the mountainous regions.
Given the rising water level, it is not possible to resume river rafting operations from September 1st. A schedule for rafting operations will be determined only after the water level recedes.
Ganges water level continues to rise
River rafting operations on the Ganges typically cease on June 30th due to the monsoon season and rising water levels. Operations usually resume on September 1st after a break of about two months. However, heavy rains in the mountainous regions have caused the Ganges and its tributaries to swell. Consequently, the water level of the Ganges keeps rising. Given the current situation, there is no immediate prospect of knowing when rafting operations will begin. Once the water level drops, a team from the Tourism Department will conduct a reconnaissance survey of the river. The green signal for rafting operations will be given only after this survey. Dinesh Bhatt, former president of the Ganges River Rafting Rotation Committee, stated that the water level remains significantly high.
Rafting operations are currently not feasible. Departmental procedures will commence once the water level recedes. Guidelines will be issued to rafting operators by the Tourism Department only after these procedures are completed.
