The Kerala High Court refused to pass an interim order suspending the sentence of former DGP Tomin J. Thachankary in a disproportionate assets case, while granting the State permission to file a counter-affidavit opposing his appeal.
Justice A. Badharudeen granted the prosecution two days to file objections and scheduled the hearing for September 24.
What is the case?
This order follows an appeal filed by Thachankary against the conviction and four-year prison sentence handed down by a Vigilance Court last Thursday in the disproportionate assets case.
Court also imposed a fine
The Vigilance Court had also imposed a fine of ₹30.84 lakh on him. In his petition, Thachankary stated that the FIR registered by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau initially covered assets allegedly acquired between January 1, 2003, and March 1, 2005; this period was later extended to July 4, 2007—the day searches were conducted at various locations and documents were seized.
