A police encounter took place late Monday night in the Tahbarpur police station area involving two members of an inter-district gang of thieves, each carrying a reward of ₹25,000.
Both criminals sustained gunshot wounds to their legs during the police’s retaliatory fire; they were subsequently arrested and sent to CHC Tahbarpur for medical treatment. Two country-made pistols, three live cartridges, two spent casings, and ₹15,250 in cash were recovered from their possession.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Dilshad (a resident of Bareilly) and Sonu Ali, alias Asgar (a resident of Shahjahanpur). Both had been absconding for a long time, and the SSP had announced a reward of ₹25,000 on each of them. According to the police, four other members of the gang had already been arrested; a total of six criminals from the gang have now been apprehended. During interrogation, the accused revealed that they would conduct reconnaissance of villages using an SUV, break into houses at night via the roof or rear entrance, and steal jewelry and cash after cutting locks with a machine. Police state that, in addition to Azamgarh, the gang has committed crimes in Ghazipur, Ballia, Jaunpur, and Ambedkar Nagar. A total of 20 cases are registered against the two accused across Aligarh, Azamgarh, and Ambedkar Nagar.
