Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’—who has successfully defended the Congress party’s invincible stronghold in the Rampur Khas assembly constituency—will now take the helm of the party across the entire state. With the 2027 assembly elections approaching in about four months, the Congress has appointed Mona, a three-time consecutive MLA and the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, as the state party president.
Having upheld her father Pramod Tiwari’s political legacy by maintaining an unbroken winning streak in Rampur Khas, Mona now faces the major challenge of transforming this legacy into strength for the state organization. She will have to shoulder the responsibility of breathing new life into the Congress party. She began her political journey through social activism.
Mona, the daughter of Rajya Sabha member Pramod Tiwari and the late Dr. Alka Tiwari, started her political career through social causes. She became involved in social activities in 1994 through the Saryu Samaj Kalyan Sansthan. Subsequently, she stepped into active politics from the Rampur Sangramgarh block, serving as the Block Pramukh unopposed for three consecutive terms (2002–07, 2007–12, and 2012–14). The Rampur Khas assembly seat fell vacant in 2013 after Pramod Tiwari moved to the Rajya Sabha. Mona entered assembly politics by winning the 2014 by-election.
She further carried forward her father’s political legacy by securing victories in the 2017 and 2022 elections. She was first elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party on May 16, 2014, a position she continues to hold. A wave of joy swept through party members and supporters as soon as the announcement was made on Friday night.
Rampur Khas: A Congress Stronghold for Four Decades
Congress’s dominance in Rampur Khas is considered the primary foundation of Mona’s political strength. Pramod Tiwari was elected MLA from this constituency nine consecutive times, starting in 1980. Their record of electoral victories is listed in the Limca Book of Records. Pramod Tiwari, who served as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party five times, is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan and the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
Even amidst adverse political circumstances, the father-daughter duo has kept the Congress flag flying high in Rampur Khas. Now, this very political experience will serve as the foundation for Mona’s test at the state level. Counted among the trusted aides of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka, and Mallikarjun Kharge, Mona has been active in both the organization and the legislature. She has also been conferred with various social and political honors.
**A Major Test as State President**
Regaining lost ground in Uttar Pradesh politics is no easy task for the Congress. Entrusting Mona with the responsibility of State President at this juncture is seen as a sign of the party’s confidence in the successful political style demonstrated in Rampur Khas. It remains to be seen how much new ground Mona—who carved a political identity for herself riding on her father’s invincible legacy—can break for the Congress in the state. This responsibility, assumed just before the assembly elections, will be the biggest test of her political journey.
**Munishwar Dutt Also Served as President**
Many political stars have risen on the horizon of Pratapgarh’s politics; one such name is Pt. Munishwar Dutt Upadhyay. Recognizing his organizational acumen, he was appointed President of the State Congress Committee in 1955. Now, that position has once again come to Pratapgarh.
