There is good news for Ranchi University players. They will now receive an allowance of ₹550 instead of ₹300 for participating in inter-college competitions. Similarly, coaches or managers will receive ₹700 instead of ₹400. This represents an 83% increase in the players’ allowance. Additionally, life insurance coverage will be provided for all university players.
These decisions were taken during a meeting of the university’s Sports Control Board held on Tuesday, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Saroj Sharma. The Vice-Chancellor remarked that Ranchi University is rich in sporting talent and emphasized the responsibility to discover and nurture new talent. Several other decisions were also made during the meeting. Attendees included Dhyan Chand Awardee Sumrai Tete, University Registrar Dr. R.K. Sharma, DSW Dr. Sudesh Kumar Sahu, International Volleyball Coach Rajesh Kumar Singh, DSO Shivendra Kumar, International Athletics Coach Vinod Singh, and Chanchal Bhattacharya, among others.
**Increased allowances and insurance for players and coaches**
Allowances for Ranchi University players have been raised. Players participating in inter-college tournaments will now receive an allowance of ₹550, up from the previous ₹300. Coaches or managers will receive ₹700, an increase from the earlier ₹400. For All-India University tournaments, the player’s allowance will now be ₹850 (previously ₹550), while coaches or managers will receive ₹800 (previously ₹600). A notification regarding these increased allowances will be issued soon, and players will begin receiving the benefits. Furthermore, life insurance will be arranged for all players affiliated with Ranchi University; discussions will be held with DSO Shivendra Kumar to implement this insurance coverage, modeled after the state government’s scheme. Meanwhile, the university will procure mats for Kabaddi and Kho-Kho.
**Ranchi University: A Hub of Sporting Talent**
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Saroj Sharma stated that Ranchi University has long been rich in sporting talent. Athletes such as Salima Tete and Nikki Pradhan, as well as Parvati Kumari and Vinima Dhan—who excelled in the Junior Hockey Championship—have brought glory to the university.
Subsequently, Dr. Birendra Kullu, the Director of Sports and Physical Education, presented the sports report for the 2025-26 academic year and highlighted the university’s sporting achievements.
**Calendar Released; Selection Committee Formed**
During the meeting, the list of selection committees for various inter-college sports for the 2026-27 session was released. Discussions were also held regarding the projected budget for trials and selection processes for East Zone and All India Inter-University tournaments. Additionally, the sports calendar for 2026-27 was unveiled. Former international hockey player Sumrai Tete recommended organizing two-to-three-week training camps for the players.
