With the route to Bhagalpur’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital (Mayaganj) obstructed, patients are being forced to travel long distances to Purnia Medical College.
Following the suspension of traffic on the Vikramshila Setu, patients from Naugachia Sub-divisional Hospital are being referred to Purnia Medical College instead of Bhagalpur.
Between October 1 and 9, approximately 45 patients suffering from gunshot wounds, road accident injuries, and other severe trauma were transferred to Purnia.
Diagnostic services are stalled as the hospital lacks CT scan facilities, and the X-ray machine has been out of order for the past two days.
Around 90 deliveries took place over nine days; five newborns with low birth weight or medical complications were sent to Purnia for advanced care.
According to hospital data, approximately 45 critical patients were referred to Purnia for better treatment between October 1 and 9. These primarily included victims of road accidents and shootings, as well as patients suffering from severe head and bone injuries or complex medical conditions.
A severe lack of diagnostic facilities at the hospital is exacerbating the situation. Naugachia Sub-divisional Hospital lacks CT scan facilities, and its only digital X-ray machine has been non-functional for the last two days.
Unable to accurately diagnose patients suffering from severe trauma or internal ailments, doctors are left with no option but to refer them to higher-level medical institutions. With basic diagnostic equipment out of order, impoverished patients from remote areas are forced to turn to private diagnostic centers or travel to Purnia.
Changes in the ambulance system and referral of newborns; Hospital Functioning with a Team of 10 Doctors
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Pinkesh Kumar stated that ambulance services have been adjusted to handle emergency situations following the closure of the bridge. Out of a total of four ambulances, one is out of order, while three smaller ambulances and one large ambulance remain operational.
Meanwhile, approximately 90 babies have been born at the hospital over the past nine days; of these, five newborns—delivered prematurely or with low birth weight—were referred to Purnia for intensive care.
Currently, the hospital staff includes a total of 10 doctors—comprising three female doctors and two pediatricians—along with two dressers, one OT assistant, and one X-ray technician.
