The world’s smallest plane is only 8 feet long; the story behind this Guinness World Record-holding aircraft is fascinating.

Date:

When you hear the word “airplane,” you likely picture a large aircraft with expansive wings. But would you believe it if I told you there’s a plane even smaller than a car?

In fact, such a plane actually exists—it’s so tiny that it looks just like a toy. It’s even earned a spot in the Guinness World Records and has successfully taken to the skies. Let’s find out what this plane is called and where it is today. The world’s smallest flying aircraft.

The plane is named “Star Bumble Bee II,” created by American pilot and designer Robert H. Star. It holds the Guinness World Record as the smallest flying aircraft ever built. This tiny biplane had a wingspan of just 5 feet 6 inches and a total length of 8 feet 10 inches. It stood only 3 feet 11 inches tall. First flight in 1988.

The aircraft weighed approximately 180 kilograms, with a take-off weight—including the pilot and fuel—of 260 kilograms. This miniature plane completed its maiden flight on April 2, 1988, at Marna Airpark near Tucson, Arizona. It was this flight that secured its place in the Guinness World Records.

Built to break records.

Before the Bumble Bee II, Robert Star—in collaboration with aircraft designer Ray Stits—had flown the “Stits Sky Baby,” which became the world’s smallest aircraft following its first flight in 1952.

Later, in 1984, Star designed and built an aircraft of his own, which he named the “Bumble Bee.” When the record for this aircraft was broken, they built the ‘Bumble Bee II,’ which went on to claim the record for the world’s smallest aircraft.

What happened to this aircraft?
The Bumble Bee II crashed on May 5, 1988—just one month after its maiden flight. The pilot was injured in the incident, and the aircraft was completely destroyed. However, the earlier ‘Bumble Bee’ aircraft still exists today, in good condition. Even though the Bumble Bee II no longer exists, it still holds the world record for the smallest aircraft.
