On Sunday night, a sudden fire broke out in a moving Verna car on Sector-37/24 dividing road in Chandigarh, creating a stir. A Punjab Police employee and his NRI brother who were travelling in the car had a narrow escape in the accident. The fire brigade immediately reached the spot and controlled the fire. After receiving the information, DSP South Jaswinder Singh, DSP Traffic, Traffic Police, PCR and Ambulance also reached the spot.
DSP Jaswinder Singh said that a fire suddenly broke out under the bonnet of the Verna car number PB-11. The car riders did not know about the fire. During this, the employees travelling in the Punjab Police vehicle passing by informed the Verna car riders about the fire. After this, they immediately got out of the car. It was a matter of luck that the car riders came to know about the fire in time, otherwise the fire could have spread to the engine and caused a blast, which could have caused loss of life. Two brothers Ramandeep and Sukhdeep were travelling in the car. Both had returned from Canada on Friday itself. They had come to Chandigarh for shopping.
Kept asking for water bottles to extinguish the fire
Sector-24 resident Anita Sharma said that she is a senior assistant in Punjab University. She was taking a walk with her 16-year-old daughter. Seeing the car on fire, she called 112 and informed the fire department. After this, she kept trying to stop the drivers from coming near the burning car, but no one was ready to listen to her. People kept passing by risking their lives. The lock of the bonnet had melted due to the fire and the bonnet was not opening. She kept trying to extinguish the fire by stopping people’s cars and asking for water bottles, but the fire was inside the bonnet, due to which the fire was not extinguishing. Anita said that only a few people stopped to help. After this, she called her servant and got water from Sector-24. A municipal water tanker was passing by the road, she asked for help from them too, but there was no water in the tanker.
If the car catches fire, break the glass with the headrest and get out
DSP South Jaswinder Singh asked the car riders that if the fire spread in the entire car, how would they have come out. On this, the DSP said that they should have kicked the door and broken it. The DSP said that it can take a lot of time to break it by kicking and it is also not confirmed whether the door will break or not. On this, the DSP said that in such a situation use the headrest. A part of the headrest is inside the car seat which is pointed. If the glass of the car is hit with this pointed part, then the glass breaks immediately. After this, the car riders can easily open the door and come out.
