An important meeting was held regarding this, which was chaired by Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma. He clearly said that strict action will be taken against those who break the rules and solid waste will have to be thrown only at the designated places.
This meeting was called under the instructions of NGT to review the “Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2016” and other matters related to the environment.
Environment Director Saurabh Kumar said that about 232 million liters of dirty water is released in Chandigarh every day, while the treatment capacity is 255 MLD. He said that all the sewage treatment plants in the city are working properly and wherever garbage is being dumped illegally, CCTV cameras will be installed so that the culprits can be identified and action can be taken under Municipal Bylaws 2018.
Monitoring is being done every week
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Amit Kumar said that the Municipal Corporation has consulted expert agencies to run all STPs as per the set standards. He said that no untreated dirty water is being released into the drains and it is being monitored every week.
He also said that pipelines of tertiary treated water are being laid, which will later provide this water to parks, roundabouts, roadsides, government institutions and industries.
Cleaning of old waste will be completed by July It was told in the meeting that the bio-remediation process of legacy waste is going on and this work will be completed by July 2025. At the same time, the dirty leachate coming out of the landfill site is being cleaned in two treatment plants.
