The incidents of stray dog bites are increasing continuously in Haryana and Punjab. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has now shown strictness regarding this. The court has sought a report from the municipal corporation and administration of both the states about what work has been done so far for sterilization and vaccination of dogs, and how many dog bite cases have come to light.
However, the court has raised questions on the dog sterilization program going on in Chandigarh. The court said that the orders given in 2015 were not followed, because the number of dogs has increased more instead of decreasing. The High Court has decided that now all the petitions related to this matter will be sent to the Supreme Court, so that a concrete decision can be taken for the whole country at once. The Supreme Court had also recently said that all the states and municipal corporations across the country will have to ensure that the sterilization and vaccination of dogs is done properly.
Let us tell you that this matter was first raised by a person named Gurmukh Singh. She told the court that while she was on a morning walk in Chandigarh’s Rose Garden, she was surrounded by stray dogs and many people in the area have been bitten by the dogs.
The petition in this case was filed by lawyers Saurabh Arora and Kunal Malwani. Maneka Gandhi, who is an animal rights activist, became the respondent in this case and her side was represented by lawyer Kunal Dawar. Another animal activist named Sunayana Sibal also joined the case, whose side was represented by lawyer Virendra Sibal.
