A severe winter is expected in Punjab this year. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted severe cold and a cold wave for Punjab and the entire northern India. The biggest reason for this year’s cold wave is attributed to La Niña, a phenomenon caused by a drop in sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. The influence of La Niña makes cold winds more active.
According to weather experts, although La Niña will be weak this time, its effect may persist from November to January. During La Niña, Western Disturbances are more active in northern and central India, leading to increased snowfall and impacting the weather in the plains. Temperatures are expected to remain below normal in most parts of northern India, including Punjab, between December and January.
The department estimates that night temperatures in December may drop by about two degrees Celsius below normal. According to a report, the minimum temperature in many places, including Punjab, is expected to remain between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius over the next three to four days. The International Monetary Fund (IMD) has warned that dense fog, cold waves, and a sharp drop in minimum temperatures are likely in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh over the next two months.
Impact of Snowfall in Mountainous Areas
Snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will increase cold winds and fog in plains like Punjab. This will also increase fog and humidity in the mornings. The impact of La Niña is not limited to temperatures; it also affects rainfall and wind patterns.
