A massive sit-in protest was staged in Amritsar today to protest against the deteriorating law and order situation, rampant mafia rule, and rising instances of extortion in Punjab. The protesters alleged that the state’s law and order situation is continuously worsening due to the inexperience and alleged excesses of the Bhagwant Mann government. The demonstration is taking place outside the Hall Gate in the city. Several prominent leaders—including BJP Punjab State President Sunil Jakhar, National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, Executive President Ashwani Sharma, and Union Minister Ravneet Bittu—are participating in the protest. The primary objective of this demonstration is to raise a collective voice against the government regarding several critical issues that have recently come to light. The protesters are demanding an impartial inquiry into the case involving DM Gagandeep Singh Randhawa. They assert that an independent and transparent investigation is essential to uncover the truth in this matter. Additionally, outrage is being expressed over the incident of desecration involving the statue of Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar in Hoshiarpur—an event that has significantly heated up the political atmosphere. The protesters allege that such incidents are undermining social harmony. Furthermore, the sit-in is also being held to protest against the recent attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party office located in Chandigarh. The protesters are demanding that the government take strict action and ensure accountability in all these matters.
During the sit-in, various speakers stated that the common people of Punjab feel unsafe. The dominance of mafia elements is on the rise, and incidents of extortion show no signs of abating. The protesters alleged that the government has proven to be a complete failure in bringing crime under control. At the protest site, slogans were raised vigorously against the government, demanding that the law and order situation in the state be immediately rectified, strict action be taken against criminals, and the general public be assured of their safety. The protesters warned that if the situation does not improve, they will further intensify their agitation.
