In Khanna, hundreds of laborers from a private factory blocked the National Highway to press their demands. The sit-in protest was staged on the GT Road, just outside the factory near Manji Sahib, severely disrupting traffic and causing a massive jam.
Allegations of Low Wages and Mistreatment
According to reports, this factory is one of the major industrial units in the region, employing thousands of workers. The laborers allege that the factory management is subjecting them to unfair treatment. They claim that while regulations mandate an eight-hour workday, they are being forced to work for 10 to 11 hours. Furthermore, allegations regarding low wages and mistreatment have also been leveled against the management. A large number of female laborers also participated in the sit-in, raising loud slogans in support of their rights. The laborers warned that if their demands were not met, they would intensify their struggle. They stated that they have been facing these issues for a long time, yet their grievances have gone unheard.
Traffic on GT Road Disrupted for an Extended Period
Meanwhile, officials from the factory management arrived at the scene and attempted to reason with the laborers. The management suggested that the matter could be resolved through dialogue; however, the laborers stood firm on their demands and refused to lift the blockade. As a result of this incident, traffic on the GT Road remained disrupted for a considerable time, causing significant inconvenience to commuters. Police and administrative officials also reached the spot and attempted to bring the situation under control. At the time of writing, the laborers’ sit-in was still ongoing, and negotiations were underway to find a resolution to the issue. The laborers have issued a warning that if their demands are not met promptly, they will escalate their agitation to a much larger scale.
