Taking a significant step towards making Punjab drug-free, the state government launched the ‘Surma’ campaign on Friday at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan in Ludhiana. While inaugurating the campaign, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann honored youths who had successfully overcome drug addiction and called upon them to become ambassadors of change in society.
He stated that youths who have personally broken free from the grip of addiction are best positioned to inspire others to stay away from this menace. During the event, the recovered youths were honored with special T-shirts and rings inscribed with the word ‘Surma’. The Chief Minister remarked that these youths would now serve as role models in society, guiding those trapped in addiction toward a new life. He emphasized that anyone can transform their life if given the opportunity for reform.
Efforts to Create a Positive Environment
The Chief Minister noted that the government cannot resolve the drug problem merely by enacting laws or imposing restrictions. It is essential to provide youths with a positive environment, sports facilities, and employment opportunities. He stated that the government aims to create an atmosphere where the youth are encouraged to pursue sports, education, and employment.
He announced that 3,100 sports grounds and 300 gymnasiums would soon be developed across the state. Youths who have overcome addiction will particularly benefit from these facilities, enabling them to engage in positive activities. The Chief Minister further assured that the government would provide full support in securing employment for these youths, helping them become self-reliant.
