Residents of Nikuchakk village staged a protest and blocked the highway at the local Buddhabar Chowk today, expressing outrage over the lack of justice from the Hajipur police. The blockade caused traffic jams stretching nearly two kilometers on both sides of the road, subjecting the general public and commuters to severe inconvenience amidst the scorching heat.
According to reports, a family from Nikuchakk village had lodged a complaint with the Hajipur police on June 27. The complaint alleged that a young man from a village under the jurisdiction of the Dasuya police station was blackmailing their daughter. The family had demanded strict legal action against the accused. When no concrete action was taken by the police even seven days after the complaint was filed, the aggrieved family, supported by fellow villagers, staged a sit-in protest at Buddhabar Chowk today. The protesters raised slogans against the Punjab Police and the Punjab government, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. During the commotion, which lasted about two hours, the Hajipur police made two attempts to pacify and persuade the protesters. The blockade was finally lifted—and traffic restored—only after the police administration gave a firm assurance that prompt and impartial action would be taken against the accused to ensure justice.
