When dreams are big, even the obstacles in one’s path bow before sheer determination. Pranavi Urs made history by winning the first-ever individual gold medal for Indian women’s golf at the 20th Asian Games (held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan). Her success represents more than just a medal win; it is a triumph of a daughter’s unwavering spirit, a family’s countless sacrifices, and a refusal to give up—a tenacity that rewrote the script of destiny.
The fairways of Jamshedpur—the ‘Steel City’—played a pivotal role in this inspiring journey, which saw her overcome a career-threatening wrist injury to become a continental champion.
Who is Pranavi Urs?
At just 23 years of age, Pranavi Urs has carved a distinct niche for herself in the world of golf. Winning a medal at the Asian Games ranks among the greatest achievements of her career so far. Born on April 15, 2003, in Mysuru, Karnataka, Pranavi began playing golf at the tender age of six. She was inspired to take up the sport by her father and brother. She claimed numerous titles on the junior and amateur golf circuits at a young age; notable victories include the 2018 Singha World Junior Championship in Thailand and the All-India Junior Girls Championship. She subsequently turned professional in 2020.
Pranavi hails from the royal city of Mysuru.
Hailing from the historic city of Mysuru in Karnataka, 23-year-old Pranavi was born into a sports-loving family. Her parents, Sharath Urs and Trisha Urs, recognized the talent hidden within their daughter early in her childhood. She began her golfing journey at the Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club in Mysuru at the tender age of seven. Despite the financial and technical challenges inherent in this expensive sport, her parents cut back on their own needs to ensure their daughter’s dreams never faltered.
**A Broken Wrist, but Unbroken Spirit**
Pranvi’s journey in the sport has been a rollercoaster ride. Just as her professional career was gaining momentum, a severe wrist fracture brought everything to a halt. For months, she struggled even to grip a golf club, and clouds of uncertainty loomed over her future.
Throughout the period of excruciating pain and lengthy rehabilitation, the support of her parents became her greatest strength. Returning with immense mental fortitude, Pranvi made history by winning five titles in a single season on the National Women’s Pro Tour.
**Jamshedpur Helped Hone Her Game During the Struggle**
To regain her rhythm after recovering from the injury, Pranvi visited Jamshedpur during the 2021-22 season for the National Women’s Tour. She trained rigorously and competed at the Beldih and Golmuri golf courses, both managed by Tata Steel.
Pranvi was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award by the Government of India in 2023. Additionally, in January 2022, she was inducted into the core group of the ‘Target Olympic Podium Scheme’ (TOPS) to receive specialized support for her Olympic preparations.
Local senior golfer Sanjay Pachauri recalls her extraordinary dedication and calm demeanor while playing in Jamshedpur during her recovery. When she secured the country’s first-ever golf gold medal at the Asian Games on Saturday with a historic score of 15-under-par, the golfing community in Jamshedpur also took immense pride in the success of this resilient athlete.
