Results are emerging for the Legislative Council (MLC) elections held on October 23 across four states. Counting is underway for the MLC elections in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra, while the results for all four seats in Karnataka have already been declared.
On Wednesday, October 28, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeted the Congress party regarding the results of these MLC elections. The BJP claims that even when elections are conducted using ballot papers, the Congress has failed to make any significant mark.
In a press conference, BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi stated, “The message is clear: the Congress party has failed to even register its presence in these (MLC) elections. Most importantly, these elections were conducted using ballot boxes and ballot papers, yet the Congress still failed to make its presence felt.”
Trivedi added, “To use the terminology often employed by Congress leaders, the party has failed to even demonstrate its own existence. It is evident that the Congress lacks the capacity to garner support from the public or the electorate in any election—whether it is conducted via EVMs or ballot papers.”
‘Rahul Gandhi has returned from his leisure trip’
Following the victory of the BJP and its NDA allies in the MLC elections, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi launched a sharp attack on the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
Referring to the Congress rally scheduled for November 1 at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, Trivedi remarked, “The Congress should realize that Rahul Gandhi has just returned after spending nearly two weeks enjoying himself on a leisure trip. Now, he is talking about launching a movement that could potentially create difficulties for the Indian economy.” The BJP MP further stated, “Rahul Gandhi should realize that neither the public nor the MLAs are with him. The Congress must understand that public support is earned through hard work, not through leisure trips and merrymaking.”
Sudhanshu Trivedi added, “Our national office-bearer Nitin Navin is currently touring Uttar Pradesh, while Amit Shah is in Punjab. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi was nowhere to be found—he was off traveling in ‘Champa’ (an ancient name for Vietnam). And yet, he still expects to gain the public’s support.”
The BJP leader continued, “I would advise the Congress party to shed its habit of avoiding hard work; if they do, the narrative about ‘stolen votes’ will vanish on its own.”
This sharp remark from the BJP comes at a time when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been repeatedly accusing the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of irregularities.
A dig at D.K. Shivakumar
The Congress has suffered a crushing defeat in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections. The opposition alliance—comprising the BJP and the JD(S)—swept all four seats. With the ruling Congress failing to secure even a single seat, the BJP took a dig at D.K. Shivakumar.
The BJP’s Karnataka unit posted on the social media platform X: “DK, it’s done, bro!”
The post further noted, “The NDA has won all four constituencies—comprising teachers’ and graduates’ seats—in the MLC elections!”
The BJP retained its hold on the North-East Teachers’, South-East Graduates’, and West Graduates’ constituencies, while its ally, the JD(S), snatched the Bengaluru Teachers’ seat from the Congress.
