Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday attended the 150th Foundation Day program of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) organized at Bhartiya Mandapam. The PM gave a 25-minute speech here. During this, he talked about the development of IMD, its importance and challenges.
PM Modi said, today we are celebrating 150 years of the Indian Meteorological Department i.e. IMD. This is not only the journey of the Indian Meteorological Department, it is also the journey of modern science and technology in our India. IMD has not only served crores of Indians, but has also become a symbol of India’s scientific journey.
In the previous governments, disasters were dismissed as destiny – PM Modi
He further said in his address, today all the updates related to weather are available on WhatsApp. Many cyclones came in the last 10 years but we showed zero or minimum loss of life. In the previous governments, when thousands of lives were lost in such natural disasters, it was dismissed as destiny.
The PM also inaugurated ‘Mission Mausam’ here. Apart from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives, officials from Middle East and South East Asia also participated in the program.

He said, to make India a climate-smart nation, we have also launched ‘Mission Mausam’. Mission Mausam is also a symbol of India’s commitment towards sustainable future and future readiness.
Due to our meteorological advancement, our disaster management capacity has been built. The whole world is getting its benefits.
Today our Flash Flood Guidance system is also giving information to Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
PM told 4 specialties of IMD
Early Warning for All has been issued through IMD. It has access to 90% of the country’s population. Everyone gets information about the past and the coming 10 days.
Weather forecasts reach directly on WhatsApp. We created the Meghdoot mobile app. Where information is available in all the local languages of the country.
10 years ago, only 10% of the country’s farmers and livestock farmers used to get information related to the weather. Today this number has increased to more than 50%. Even information about lightning strikes is available on mobile.
When millions of sea fishermen of the country used to go to sea, their families used to fear some mishap. Now fishermen are getting real time updates.
PM Modi also released coins and postage stamps
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched ‘Mission Mausam’ with the goal of making the country a ‘weather-ready and climate-smart’ nation.
Along with this, he also released the IMD Vision-2047 document for weather-related adaptability and climate change adaptation. It includes plans for weather forecasting, weather management and climate change mitigation. To make the ceremony memorable, special commemorative coins and postage stamps of Rs 150 were also released.
