To ensure smooth traffic, prevent accidents and ensure safety of people, the administration has banned the movement of heavy vehicles on Airport Road (PR 7) from Sector-66/82 junction to Airport roundabout. Heavy vehicles will not ply on this route from 8 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 8 pm. According to District Magistrate Komal Mittal, heavy traffic jams during peak hours cause inconvenience to motorists and increase the risk of accidents.
Being a major connecting route between Mohali, Chandigarh and the international airport, it witnesses heavy traffic on a daily basis, including office goers, school buses and public transport. The new arrangement has been implemented to ensure safe and hassle-free travel. These orders will come into effect from August 4. Heavy vehicles will include trucks, multi-axle goods carriers and construction equipment transporters.
However, emergency vehicles (ambulances, fire engines, police and disaster response vehicles), vehicles carrying essential commodities (milk, water, medical supplies), and public vehicles of government and municipal corporations are exempted. The District Magistrate has directed the Senior Superintendent of Police and Chief Engineer GMADA to strictly enforce the order by putting up proper signs on the restricted route. Action will be taken against the person violating the order.
