The court of Additional Sessions Judge Parminder Singh Rai, while delivering the verdict in a horrific murder case, sentenced 45-year-old Prabhavati to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000. She was convicted of murdering her husband, Babu Lal, in connivance with her childhood lover, Radhey Shyam. Radhey Shyam is still at large.
How was the case revealed?
On the night of February 28, 2020, a headless body was found near Transport Nagar Chowk, causing a sensation in the area. A bicycle was found lying near the body, and the deceased was wearing only underwear. The body was cremated on March 3, as it was unidentified, but the police preserved samples for DNA testing.
Son and brother-in-law exposed the conspiracy
On March 6, Babu Lal’s 17-year-old son, Rajesh, went to the police station with his mother, Prabhavati, and reported his father missing. The police became suspicious, and upon investigation, it was discovered that the body’s height, body structure, and underwear size matched Babu Lal’s.
The son and brother-in-law also expressed suspicion of Prabhavati. When the police checked Prabhavati’s call details, the location of a man named Radhe Shyam was found near the crime scene. Radhe was Prabhavati’s childhood sweetheart and was currently working as a driver in Chandigarh. The head was found through Prabha’s identification, confirmed by DNA.
Prabhavati was called in for questioning based on suspicion. When the police questioned her rigorously, she broke down and revealed the truth. She revealed that she and Radhe had wanted to get married, but under family pressure, she had married Babu Lal. Despite this, she continued her relationship with Radhe. When Babu Lal discovered this relationship, he objected. Radhe and Prabhavati then conspired to kill him. On the night of February 27th, while Babu Lal was sleeping, Radhe slit his throat with a large knife. Then, they stuffed the body into three sacks and threw it on a bicycle near a canal outside the city.
Radhe Shyam is absconding.
After the murder, Radhe took Babu Lal’s mobile phone and went to Chandigarh, switching it off after a few days to mislead the police. After carrying out this entire conspiracy, Prabhavati went to her village with her son and tried to save herself by filing a false complaint at the police station. However, a DNA test confirmed that the body was Babu Lal’s. The police filed a charge sheet, and now the court has convicted Prabhavati and sentenced her to life imprisonment. Radhe Shyam is still absconding and the search for him is ongoing.
