Residents living in Gadaipur Street No. 1, which falls under Ward No. 2 in the North Assembly constituency, have completely lost faith in the Municipal Corporation. Despite repeated complaints about the clogged sewer, the corporation took no action. On Sunday, local residents opened the sewer chambers themselves and began cleaning them.
Local residents reported that the sewerage system has been completely out of order for the past three months. Due to the clogged sewers, dirty water has entered people’s homes, causing an unbearable stench and an increased risk of disease. Residents of the neighborhood say that this area is a slum area and that municipal officials never pay attention.
Most of the residents are migrants who work in factories and shops. Since Sunday was a holiday, they took ropes and buckets to open the gutters themselves. Many people took turns going inside the chambers and scooping out the dirty water and mud. Seeing this scene, it seemed as if this area had been removed from the municipal corporation’s map.
Expressing their displeasure, people said that MPs, MLAs, and municipal councilors make big promises during elections, but after winning, no one even inquires about their well-being. If the public has to clean the sewers themselves, then what’s the need for these public representatives? On Sunday, several residents of the neighborhood, including Rajesh, Sonu, Raju, Mukesh, Babu Lal, Ravinder, Pintu, and Suraj, united and attempted to solve the sewer blockage problem on their own. They warned that if the municipal corporation doesn’t arrange for regular cleaning and maintenance in the area soon, they will launch a massive protest. During this time, there was deep anger among the people against the ruling party, the Aam Aadmi Party.
Harpreet Walia, councilor of Ward No. 2, visited the municipal corporation’s zone office several times to report the sewerage problem in Gadaipur, but each time the officials and employees evaded their attention. Sometimes they say the motor is broken and the water isn’t flowing forward, sometimes they say the line behind is clogged. I’ve been running around the corporation for two months, but no one seems concerned.
